Drive-Thru Gallery

1999

Cornish College of the Arts, Seattle, WA

Finished walls were constructed within a drive-through passage to a parking lot, transforming the site into a temporary exhibition space. Grey carpet lined the ground and track lighting was installed overhead, collectively referencing the conventions of a traditional gallery environment.

As cars continued to pass through, the space was continuously activated—each vehicle momentarily occupying the role of subject and object. In this shifting context, the everyday flow of traffic became the artwork itself, collapsing distinctions between viewer, object, and site.
